How much do AM, A1, A2, and A driver’s licenses cost?

For many people, obtaining a motorcycle license is the first step into the world of two wheels. But what costs will you incur if you opt for classes AM, A1, A2, or A? And what about the B196 extension, which can be an interesting option for car drivers? Here is an overview:

Class AM driver's license

Class AM is the entry level into the world of motorized two-wheelers and allows you to ride scooters and mopeds up to 45 km/h.

  • Cost: Between €500 and €1,000, depending on the region and driving school.
  • Included: Theory and practical lessons, teaching materials, and exam fees.
  • Age limit: 15 years and older (depending on the state).
  • Special features: The AM driver’s license is usually included in the B driver’s license.

Class A1 driver's license

The A1 driver’s license allows you to drive light motorcycles with an engine capacity of up to 125 cc and a maximum power output of 15 hp.

  • Cost: Between €1,200 and €1,800.
  • Included:
    • Compulsory hours of theory and practice
    • teaching material
    • first aid course
    • Examination fee

B196 extension:

Drivers who have held a Class B license for at least 5 years and are over 25 years of age can also drive Class A1 vehicles with additional training (approx. $350-$650).

Important: The B196 is not a separate driver’s license and is only valid in Germany.

Class A2 driver's license

The A2 driver’s license allows you to drive motorcycles up to 35 kW (48 hp) and is often the next step after the A1.

  • Cost: Between €1,300 and €2,000.
  • Enthalten:
    • More theory and practical lessons than with A1
    • teaching material
    • Prüfungsgebühren.
  • Age limit: 18 years and older.
  • Upgrade from A1: If you have held an A1 license for at least two years, you only need to take a practical exam, which saves money.

Class A driver's license

With a Class A license, you get complete freedom on a motorcycle—no restrictions on engine size or power.

  • Cost: Between €1,500 and €2,500.
  • Enthalten:
    • Umfangreiche Praxis- und Theoriestunden
    • teaching materials
    • .examination fees

Age limit: From 24 years of age (direct access) or 20 years of age after at least 2 years of holding a Class A2 license.

Step-by-step progression in motorcycle licensing

Choosing the right driver’s license depends largely on your personal needs, your age, and your long-term plans. For young drivers in particular, it is a good idea to start with a Class A1 driver’s license, which can be obtained from the age of 16. This allows you to gain initial experience on light motorcycles and develop a feel for road traffic at the same time. This step-by-step approach enables many drivers to move up to the next higher classes, such as A2 and finally A, as they gain experience and responsibility.

Class A1 is therefore not only the entry level, but also a useful foundation on which you can gradually build your skills and freedom. For adults who want to use a light motorcycle spontaneously, the B196 extension is a flexible and cost-effective option. So consider whether you want to develop your passion for motorcycles in the long term or are looking for a pragmatic solution for occasional trips.
